Diem honored... Former Northern Illinois and current Indianapolis Colts offensive lineman Ryan Diem was honored with Northern Illinois' Outstanding Young Alumni Award for 2008. He accepted the award at the Northern Illinois Alumni Association Awards Dinner in DeKalb. “I was absolutely surprised and very honored to receive this award,” Diem said. “I was excited to be in the presence of all of the award winners at the dinner on Thursday. I really appreciated the chance to play football and the education I received at NIU.” Diem played for the Huskies from 1997-2000 and was named team captain in his final two seasons. The Colts took him in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft and he started on the Colts team that won Super Bowl XLI. Last year, Diem and his wife gave a gift to name the offensive staff meeting room in the Yordon Center. “I feel very fortunate to be able to give back,” Diem said. “I look at it as a gift and it is something that is important to me and to my family.”

Jernstad wins... Left-hander Matt Jernstad pitched a career-high 8 2/3 innings and scattered five hits to help lead Northern Illinois' baseball team to a 5-3 victory against Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Tuesday at Henry Aaron Field. “Matty was outstanding for us today and set the tone against a good hitting ballclub,” NIU coach Ed Mathey said. “We got contributions from a number of guys today and won the game as a team, which is a good thing.” Jordin Hood had an RBI double in the third and in the seventh, he walked, stole second and scored on a Danny Reed double. Hood now has a 15-game hit streak. NIU pulled its record to 20-21 with the win. Jernstad is 2-0 with a 3.26 ERA in his last three starts. Andy Deain finished out the game on the mound to collect his fifth save.
