Where to go... The annual DeKalb Barbfest girls soccer tournament will get underway at 9 a.m. Saturday at DeKalb High School. It will feature eight teams - including DeKalb, Sycamore, Hinckley-Big Rock, Indian Creek and Genoa-Kingston - playing in a bracket format instead of pool play. All eight teams will be guaranteed three games.

A best for Millhorn... Grace Millhorn of the DeKalb girls track and field team ran a personal-best time of 5:20.72 in the 1,600 meter run, which was good enough for third place at the Carlson-Anderson Classic at Batavia. Millhorn's time was a junior record at DeKalb. Rikki Schramm placed second in the high jump with a jump of 5-feet. Jen Milroy finished fifth in the shot put and fifth in the discus.

Telling number... 10 Runs the Sycamore baseball team scored in a 14-3 five-inning victory over Rochelle in a Western Sun Conference make-up game on Friday.

Two sign with NIU... The Northern Illinois softball team received two letters of intent for the 2009 season to increase the 2009 incoming total to six players. Head coach Lindsay Chouinard adds her first pitcher in Morgan Bittner and signed a catcher/outfielder in Michelle Williams. Both hail from the state of California. Bittner was a four-year starter on varsity for Long Beach Poly High School where she was named the Rookie of the Year in 2005 for the CIF. That same year, she led the Southern California Jets travel team to a National Championship. In 2006, she led Long Beach to its first Moore League title in school history. In 2007, she set a new school strikeout record with 159 strikeouts in 129 innings. Williams comes to NIU after attending Fresno City College for two years.

NIU tennis falls... The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team lost its first match of a two-match road trip, falling to Miami (OH) (13-6, 7-1), 7-0, in Oxford Friday afternoon.

Huskies split... The Northern Illinois softball team split a doubleheader with Bowling Green (10-20, 8-3) in Mid-American Conference action on Friday afternoon at BGSU Softball Field. The Falcons took the first game, 5-2, behind a strong pitching performance from Hayley Wiemer. The Huskies (10-22, 4-6) salvaged the second game, 3-2, on a solo home run in the eighth inning by senior Michelle Nendza.

What to watch... Game one of the Phoenix Suns-San Antonio Spurs series starts with a 2 p.m. tip-off on ABC (Ch. 4 or 7). The series will feature big men Shaquille O'Neal and Tim Duncan.
