CARPENTESVILLE - Ryanne E. Mace, a 2006 Dundee-Crown High School graduate, is among the six dead from the Northern Illinois University shootings.
Mace, a recipient of a scholarship from the high school's French Club, was from Carpentersville.
More than 125 people already have joined a Facebook group in remembrance of Mace.
In the group's message board, friends have described her as “a wonderful person with a great heart” and a “sweet soul.”
District 300 Communications Director Allison Smith said grief counselors are on hand at Dundee-Crown today for students and staff.
“It's always horrendous to lose a member of the District 300 family. ... There is something especially devastating about the nature of this death,” Smith said. “Our staff and students are grieving in a way many have not had to grieve before and hopefully never will have to again.”
Other students who died are: Daniel Parmenter, 20, of Westchester; Catalina Garcia, 20, of Cicero; Julianna Gehant, 32, of Mendota; and Gayle Dubowski, 20, of Carol Stream.
Stephen Kazmierczak, 27, of Champaign, has been identified as the shooter.
