Police say man waved AK-47 at turkey farm

A Rochelle man was arrested around 1:15 p.m. Monday after he reportedly waved an unloaded assault rifle at people at a farm in Waterman. Gebahet Busta-mante, 45, was arrested by Rochelle Police on Monday afternoon after the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office alerted other law enforcement agencies about him after he reportedly brandished an AK-47 assault rifle. He did not make verbal threats to people but waved the gun around, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said Tuesday morning. Bustamante, an employee at the Ho-Ka Turkey Farm, 8519 Leland Road, reportedly showed up for work intoxicated, and was asked to leave. He returned to the farm around 12:45 p.m. with the weapon in hand, Scott said. Bustamante reportedly waved the rifle around, dropped the weapon, picked it up and left the farm before deputies arrived, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. He reportedly told deputies later Monday evening that he intended to sell the weapon, Scott said. “We were told by the sheriff's office and knew he resided in Rochelle and they put out a warning that he might come back to this area,” Rochelle Police Chief Rob Buck said Tuesday morning in a phone interview. “We spotted his vehicle as it came in town, and found he had a revoked license.” The rifle was in the passenger seat next to Bustamante but no bullets were found, Buck said. He was given a recognizance bond because Bustamante fell ill while in custody at the Rochelle Police Department, and was taken to Rochelle Community Hospital, Buck said. Bustamante was charged by the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct, and was charged by Rochelle Police with felony driving with a revoked license, driving without insurance and other minor traffic violations. He is in custody at the Ogle County Jail, Scott said. No court date had been set for Bustamante as of Tuesday morning. Benji Feldheim can be reached at bfeldheim@daily-chronicle.com.
