IC coach beaten outside Reilly's has diedBy Benji Feldheim - Staff WriterDeKALB - Officials say a 25-year-old Elgin man who was beaten outside a DeKalb bar early Sunday morning has died. One man has been charged with aggravated battery in the attack, and police expect other charges to be filed in the case. Luis H. Noriega, a soccer coach at Indian Creek High School in Shabbona, was jumped by a group of people outside Reilly's Bar and Eatery at 1215 Blackhawk Road around 2:15 a.m., according to DeKalb Police Lt. Jim Kayes. Noriega was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital after the attack and later transferred to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, where he died just before 4 p.m. on Sunday. Nathan E. Schrank, 21, of DeKalb has been charged with aggravated battery in connection with the attack. He remains in DeKalb County Jail on $250,000 bond. “We are in communication with the state's attorney's office to get the charges upgraded,” said Kayes. People who participated in the attack and witnesses have been interviewed by DeKalb Police, according to Kayes. As of now, Schrank is the only person to be charged in conjunction with the beating. “He was such a kind individual,” said Pat Sears, one of Noriega's friends. “He was a teacher and a student, and his effort meant a great deal to those around him.” Indian Creek officials were not aware of Noriega's death until contacted this morning by the Chronicle. “That's horrible, horrible,” ICHS Principal Jim Hammack said. “He's a nice young man.” Benji Feldheim can be reached at bfeldheim@daily-chronicle.com.
