DeKALB - The First United Preschool and Daycare Pre-K students have been studying the community around them, and many local businesses opened their doors and hearts to the students. First United Preschool and Daycare went to Rosita's Mexican Restaurant, where they were treated to beef and cheese tacos. Miss Rosa taught the students some words in Spanish and showed them some paintings done by Northern Illinois University art majors. They learned that the center of towns in Mexico always have a plaza and a church. Students also had a field trip to the Lincoln Inn. Mr. Bill and Miss Jonnie took them on a tour of the restaurant, where they saw everything from the special fire extinguishers to chefs cooking. At the end of the tour, students learned proper hand-washing techniques. Then each student was invited to make their own sandwiches under the guidance of Mr. Bill and his chefs. Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville nursing major Jim Schweitzer also stopped in for a science lesson. He first taught students the importance of eye-safety wear. Schweitzer then showed them several experiments with vinegar and baking soda. A favorite with all the students was breaking the seal of a Ziploc bag with gas produced from the vinegar and baking soda. During April, the school will focus on Easter and the new life that spring brings, learning about butterflies, spring and flowers. For more information about First United Preschool and Daycare, call (815) 787-6401. The preschool is at 321 Oak St.
