Why does DeKalb want the 'stigma' of Cavel?

PATRICIA BEWLEY

Editor: Scott Yordy hit the nail on the head in his letter Friday with his astute observations about Cavel International, the horse slaughterhouse in DeKalb. I bet the owner, Luc Van Damme, hates to read these letters. He makes so much money off his cruel little trade, he really doesn't want people to know about Cavel. Well, killing 35 mustangs just doesn't register well with people, as these wild horses should not be slaughtered for the European food chain, nor should any other horses on American soil be sacrificed for Luc and his trade. Why more people in DeKalb don't speak up about this horrible place is beyond me. Almost no one benefits from all the blood and guts at Cavel except Luc. Why a nice Midwestern town would want the stigma of this place is a mystery. Why do you want the slaughter of these sentient beings in your town? Don't you know if you make it harder instead of easier for the likes of these foreign horse-killers, they will have to go somewhere else? Wake up, DeKalb. What is in this for you?
