SYCAMORE – Sycamore High School's Class of 1978 has established a scholarship for the school's 2020 graduates to honor one of their own, the late Joel Strack.
Dawn Lyons-Dean, executive director of the Joel Strack Memorial Scholarship said the class wanted to celebrate Strack's life and his achievements by helping future leaders and students who are gifted in music and theater achieve their dreams.
The foundation will grant two $250 scholarships during the 2019-20 school year. One will go to a student who shows a high level of leadership in the community. The other scholarship will go to a student who is passionate about the performing arts, the release states.
Students can apply for the scholarships by accessing the application through the Naviance system – a college readiness software provider. Those interested in contributing to the Sycamore Education Foundation can write a check and send to the Sycamore Education Foundation, 245 W. Exchange St., Sycamore, or directly through the foundation's website at www.sycamoreSEF.org.
Lauren Holtz, executive director for the foundation, said she and the foundation's members are grateful for the generosity of the class of 1978.
"It is so touching to see that Joel's life and legacy will live on through the Sycamore students that will be positively impacted by these scholarships."
