Letter: Trying to define equality

To the Editor:

People talk equality.

Equality of what?

We have a system of free education for all through 12th grade, People spend 12 or 13 years, or more, in the care of the public educational system. Analyze what that system teaches today versus, say, 50 to 75 years ago.

Slowly but surely, the system has moved to remove programs that stress self-reliance, history (we can’t stand the truth, I guess), and I’ve not expected those who feel “oppressed” by their self-proclaimed “misfortune” of being not-privileged, nonwhite, ill-housed, ill-fed, to go back and teach the lessons learned by the Founding Fathers.

If you don’t work, you don’t eat, so to speak. Allowing all the folks access to the food supply was not working, as the lazy expected others to provide for them.

They changed the rules (read: history) and soon we had an upward-moving system, and now we are going back to the beginning.

Problem is the numbers of people “expecting everything” and contributing little or nothing are huge. There is the solution: enlightenment (a Far Eastern world terminology) or more dictatorial leadership.

Which one?
