France to honor WWII veteran from Sandwich

A World War II veteran from Sandwich, Enoch Scull Jr., will be honored by the French government for his service in the war during a ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Leon Burson Post 395 American Legion Hall, 510 E. Dearborn St. in Plano.

Scull will be presented with the French Legion of Honor, the nation’s highest medal of distinction, for his service in the campaign to liberate France from Nazi German occupation in 1944-45.

Scull served in Company B, 103rd Engineer Combat Battalion, that fought in Normandy, northern France, the Ardennes and the Rhineland.

This year marked the 75th anniversary of the Allied troops landing on the beaches of Normandy – D-Day, June 6, 1944 – to begin the successful campaign to free France and defeat Nazi Germany.

The French Legion of Honor medal was established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte and retained by all later French governments and regimes.
