Letter: McSweeney's 'Do-nothing Democrats' attack is unfounded

To the Editor:

The Daily Chronicle published an opinion column by State Rep. David McSweeney, Republican of Barrington Hills on Oct. 2, in which McSweeney said that Democrats in the Congress and Senate, instead of working to solve important problems are “laser-focused on impeachment.”

In particular, he said, U.S. Reps. Sean Casten and Lauren Underwood “have become prime examples of a do-nothing House of Representatives.”

This is simply not true. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, and Reps. Casten and Underwood, have been working hard on legislation about health care, national security, and gun safety, among other issues. The House of Representatives has passed a number of pieces of legislation, several of which were sponsored by Underwood. Who is stalling that legislation? Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the other Republicans are in charge of the Senate.

Contrary to McSweeney’s column, Democrats like Durbin, Duckwood, Casten, and Underwood were reluctant to jump on the impeachment bandwagon until numerous statements by and abundant evidence about President Donald Trump indicated that he would welcome foreign assistance in his election campaign.

And now the absolutely clear evidence of Trump’s phone call to the president of Ukraine has come to light, confirming those concerns. This evidence has forced the House to take up an impeachment inquiry or else violate their oaths of office.

Daily Chronicle editors: Please stop publishing columns that contain outright falsehoods. Please DO continue to publish perspectives from across the political spectrum. But make sure those columns are factual and truthful. Thank you!
