Fire crews respond to Cortland house fire

CORTLAND – Firefighters were called to a house at 35 East Chestnut Ave. on Friday after a fire in a first-floor bedroom became too large to put out with a fire extinguisher.

After a resident decided the fire was too big to stop with an extinguisher, he decided to call for help and get out of the house, Cortland Assistant Fire Chief Chris Fioretto said.

The man called 911 at 4:01 p.m., and firefighters from Sycamore, DeKalb and Maple Park assisted Cortland firefighters on the scene. Firefighters ran a hose into the house and were able to get the fire under control within 15 minutes, Fioretto said.

No one was injured in the incident. Fioretto said firefighters recommended that the homeowner stay somewhere else on Friday night, but the owner was going to make their own decision about that.

Fire investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire on Friday evening, and a damage estimate was not immediately available, Fioretto said.
