Underwood: Domestic terrorism is a threat to national security

U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood spoke this week about the threat of domestic terrorism to the nation’s security.

Underwood, D-Naperville, who serves as the vice chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, cited an FBI report on about
100 domestic terrorism arrests over the past year, according to a news release.

Many of those arrests involved some form of white supremacy.

“Domestic terrorism is a threat to the security of our country and it is a growing threat to our communities in the 14th District,” Underwood said in the release. “We all want our schools, our churches, and our families and neighbors to be safe, and in order to do that we must address this pervasive threat.”

The congresswoman also talked about the need to invest in rural and suburban communities such as those throughout her district.

She also said that although the Department of Homeland Security’s Protective Service advisers provide valuable assistance to infrastructure and community organizations, they are “significantly underutilized” in the 14th District.

Underwood said investment in schools, agencies, and places of worship can help prevent and combat domestic terrorism.

“As Congress works to allocate resources to the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies, rural and suburban communities like mine must receive their fair share and are not to be left vulnerable as funding goes to other cities,” Underwood said in the release.
