MAPLE PARK – Kaneland boys track and field coach Andy Drendel had broached the idea of a switch from football to cross country last summer for Class of 2020 Kaneland runner Austin Adams.
When the pair met at the Corner Grind coffee shop in Elburn, that was the topic of discussion. With the idea already on Adams’ mind, it didn’t take much work from Drendel to convince Adams, who already knew that with his intent to grow in middle- and long-distance races, that cross country training would be beneficial.
“I decided that it’d probably be better for track since I was more running 800[-meter races] and stuff to do cross country. So thought it’d be better for me,” Adams said.
