Genoa receives grant to improve Citizens Park

2019 ComEd Green Region Program awards $200,000 to 26 northern Illinois communities

GENOA – The city of Genoa is looking to improve trails near David Carrol Memorial Citizens Park and road surfaces for the park's canoe launches, which will be funded by a grant awarded Wednesday by ComEd's Green Region Program, according to a news release.

Citizens Park, at the corner of Madison Street and Park Avenue in Genoa, soon will be connected by nature trails through a paved trail which will intersect the park with surrounding native prairies, wetlands and the DeKalb County Forest Preserve, according to the release.

Canoe launches around the park also will be improved.

The paved access road also will provide a better road surface for vehicles and pedestrians when accessing the canoe launch and adjacent amenities in Citizens Park, the release shows.

Genoa is one of 26 communities in northern Illinois awarded an environmental grant by ComEd, which supports habitats and other open-space projects throughout the region. Communities were each awarded up to $10,000 of the $200,000 distributed this year. ComEd has distributed more than $1.3 million since the program's beginning in 2013, the release shows.

The 2019 ComEd Green Region Program focused on enhancing pollinator habituates and protecting pollinator species, such as butterflies and bees, the release shows.

The grants were only available to communities that ComEd services. Neighboring municipalities that received grant awards include Aurora, the Chicago Park District, Machesney Park, and the St. Charles Park District, the release shows.
