10 p.m. Friday when some animals crossed the road in front of him.

Abens lost control of the motorcycle as he tried to avoid the animals and ended up in the west ditch on the side of the road, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Abens laid in the ditch overnight until a person walking by found him about
6:40 a.m. Saturday, the release said.

Abens suffered a leg injury and was taken to Northwestern Medicine Valley West Hospital in Sandwich in a Waterman Fire Department ambulance, then moved to the trauma center at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, according to the release.
