Strohacker: Canoe the Kish or see a movie in Genoa

Small-town traditions continue this summer in charming Genoa at two of the many events planned for the season – Kayak and Canoe the Kish and Movies on Main Street.

Come and experience the beautiful Kishwaukee River on July 13. Whether you are an avid boater or a first-time sailor, this free event is tons of fun for the whole family. This community event is brought to you by the Kishwaukee Valley Wanderers, along with the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce and the city of Genoa.

Participants are welcome to bring their own boats or borrow one of ours at no cost. To register for a free kayak or canoe, call the Genoa Chamber at 815-901-5524. We will do our best to accommodate everyone’s boating needs. Two launch times of 9 a.m. and noon will be offered; indicate your launch time choice and vessel choice. New this year will be a limited supply of paddleboards provided by Northern Illinois University’s outdoor education department.

Participants will be asked to drop off any personal watercraft at Becker Park first, then shuttle from Carroll Park. No parking at Becker Park will be allowed. Cars will be towed. All vehicles should be parked at Carroll Park only. Refreshments will be available at Carroll Park after your excursion. Free brats and beverages will be provided by the Kishwaukee Valley Wanderers. The route is from Baseline Road (Becker Park) to Carroll Memorial Park (about 2.5 hours). Shuttle service will be provided from 9 a.m. to noon. Come paddle the Kish, where the sun is always at your back.

Looking for an evening adventure close to home? There’s no better way to spend a cool summer night than by enjoying a great movie in the great outdoors. This summer, Genoa welcomes back free, family fun under the stars with Movies on Main Street on July 20. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” sponsored by Edward Jones, will be shown in the city’s municipal parking lot at the corner of Route 72 and Genoa Street. The film will start at dusk (about 8:30 p.m.). But beginning at 7 p.m., guests can enjoy free popcorn, games and fun times. Don’t forget your chairs or blankets.

For questions about summer movies or the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce, call the Chamber office at 815-784-2212 or email info@genoaareachamber.com. Information about other events is available online at www.genoaareachamber.com.

Have a fantastic summer! We hope to see you soon exploring Genoa!
