To the Editor:
I was appalled to see that DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder Doug Johnson was considering closing the Northern Illinois University voter registration site, even though it had more than three times the registrations of any of the other sites.
Citing “cost-effectiveness” is a poor excuse, since obviously the NIU site has to be more effective cost-wise per voter to run than the other two sites.
Saying that NIU students should “vote in their home counties” is just a cover-up for the real reason a few people would like to see the site closed. As an NIU alumni, I can tell you, I thought of DeKalb as my home long before it became my longterm address.
More than anything else, this just sounds like a blatant case of voter suppression to me. I sincerely hope that Johnson rethinks this issue and makes a decision that will benefit the most voters.
