Police: Man tried to get shot, then injured self with BB gun

Man placed 911 call on himself

LELAND – Police said a 19-year-old Ottawa man tried to goad officers into shooting him by brandishing a BB gun late Wednesday before shooting himself in the head with it.

Leland police were called to the 100 block of North Main Street at 11:01 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a man with a gun. Once there, officers encountered a man pointing a weapon at them and threatening to kill himself. A brief standoff followed between the man and officers, according to police.

Leland Police Chief Jason Bragg said the man repeatedly asked police to shoot him before using his own weapon, which turned out to be a BB gun, to shoot himself multiple times in the head. Police intervened and were able to take him into custody.

One officer was injured during the incident but declined treatment, Bragg said.

The man was transported to Northwestern Medicine Valley West Hospital in Sandwich with multiple head wounds.

Bragg said an investigation revealed the man placed the original 911 call in an attempt to be shot to death by responding officers.

The La Salle County Sheriff’s Office and Earlville Police Department assisted.

Bragg said criminal charges are pending.
