SYCAMORE – The search for a new Sycamore School District 427 Board member is on track with plans for a hire this summer.

Applications to fill the vacant spot have been turned in, and the District 427 board will interview select candidates at a special meeting June 11. Five applications were submitted by the Tuesday deadline, member Eric Jones said .

The position was vacated May 14 by Austin Hofer when he resigned after moving outside of his elected township of Cortland. The board officially recognized Hofer’s resignation at Tuesday’s meeting.

“You still are a member of the community, you just moved to a different township,” said Jim Dombek, board president. “I know that puts you at great sadness, and it’s with great sadness that we accept your resignation, but unfortunately the law is the law and we have to obey that.”

Dombek handed Hofer his nameplate during the ceremony and said he hopes Hofer can use it again someday.

“It’s certainly not my desire to leave the board,” Hofer said. “But I’m super excited to still be in the community, still be involved with the school.”

The board plans to fill the vacancy by June 25.

The search for a future superintendent moved along Tuesday night, as well. Former Superintendent Bob Hammon prepared a job posting and application for the board to review.

The board will begin accepting applications July 15 and plans to start interviewing candidates in October. A final decision is planned for December, but the timeline may change, Hammon said.

The new superintendent will work under Superintendent Kathy Countryman through the spring 2020 semester.

OSCAR Jr. Pilot

OSCAR director Courtney Walz announced the district will begin an OSCAR Jr. pilot program in the fall. The OSCAR program provides before-and after-school care for District 427 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

OSCAR Jr. will provide out of school care for children 3 to 5 years old. The program will accept 10 children and will provide Monday through Thursday services from
7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
