Juan Castro had yet to run faster than 2:01 in an open 800-meter race in his varsity track and field career.
When he crossed the finish line at the Class 3A Rockford Guilford Sectional May 16, his time of 1:56.15 went down as the sixth-quickest qualifying time in Class 3A this season.
Castro channeled his disappointment with not fielding the squad’s strong 4x800 relay team into his 800 race.
“I was a little upset after I found to that we were not going to run it,” Castro said. “That’s where my mindset kicked in that basically pushed my physical abilities to throw my best shot out there.”
