DeKalb County Memorial Day observances

There are many events planned around the county to remember those who have died serving our country.

CRESTON

Creston Memorial Day Service

Time: 10 a.m.

Date: Monday

Place: Creston Woodlawn Cemetery

Information: 815-520-0694 or 815-751-3143. World War II Veteran Yngve Johnson will share his service story. There also will be a full roll call, reading of Flanders field, singing by Debbie Katzman and “Taps” by Sam Tracy. Bring a lawn chair. In case of bad weather, the service will be at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 124 South St.

DeKALB

American Legion, AmVets

and VFW Observances

Time: Beginning at 8:40 a.m.

Date: Sunday

Place: DeKalb area cemeteries as follows: 9 a.m. Fairview Cemetery;
9:20 a.m. St. Mary’s Cemetery; 9:35 a.m. Kishwaukee RIver on First Street bridge; 9:50 a.m. Congregational Church;
10:10 a.m. County Cemetery; 10:35 a.m. Ohio Grove Cemetery; 11:05 a.m. Cortland Cemetery; 11:35 a.m. Afton Cemetery. Worn American flags can be dropped off at American Legion Post 66, 1204 S. Fourth St., and they will be properly retired on Flag Day.

Mayors’ Memorial Day Breakfast

Time: 6:45 to 7:30 a.m.

DeKalb Memorial Day Parade

Time: 9 a.m.

Date: Monday, May 27

Place: Starts at North Third Street and Lincoln Highway and ends at the Ellwood House, 509 N. First St. There will be a ceremony on the grounds of Ellwood Museum after the parade at 9:30 a.m.

GENOA

Genoa Veterans Home Buffet

Time: 1 p.m.

Place: Genoa Veterans Home,
311 S. Washington St.

Genoa Memorial Day Parade

and Service

Time: 11:30 a.m.

Date: Monday

Place: Starts at the Genoa Veterans Home, 311 S. Washington St., and ends at the Genoa Cemetery, where services will be held at noon. The Illinois National Guard will attend and the keynote speaker will be Capt. Brian Fox.

KINGSTON

Kingston American Legion Post 1010 Memorial Service

Time: 10 a.m.

Date: Monday

Place: Kingston Park, Five Points Road and Route 72.

The service will include “Taps,” “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes and keynote speakers.

SOMONAUK

Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast

Time: 6:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Date: Monday

Place: Union Congregational Church, 305 S. Gage St.

Cost: $8 adults, $6 children ages 6 to 12, ages 5 and younger eat free

The Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude with a remembrance ceremony.

MAPLE PARK

Memorial Day Services

Time: 9 to 10:30 a.m. cemetery services, 11:30 a.m. American Legion Post ceremony, noon lunch

Date: Monday

Place: Six local cemeteries, Maple Park American Legion Post 312, 203 Main St.

Maple Park American Legion Post 312’s Honor Guard and Rifle Squad will perform at six cemeteries. Schedule: 9:15 a.m. Pierce Cemetery, 9:30 a.m. St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, 9:45 a.m. Gardner Methodist Cemetery, 10 a.m. Van Vlak Cemetery, 10:15 a.m. Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery and 10:30 a.m. South Burlington Cemetery. At 11:30 a.m., there will be a ceremony at the Post followed by a free hot dog and hamburger lunch and open house.

KIRKLAND

Memorial Day Service

Time: 1 p.m.

Date: Sunday

Place: Northern Illinois Veterans Memorial, South and Third streets

Information: 815-522-6260. After and at the stage, Second City Chorus, a men’s a cappella group, will perform. The performance will be in the East Shelter House for inclement weather. Kirkland Lions Club will sell a pork chop sandwich lunch. All proceeds benefit the Northern Illinois Veterans Memorial Fund.

MALTA

Malta Memorial Day Service

Time: 10 a.m. service

Date: Monday

Place: Malta United Methodist Church, South Third and Sprague streets

Sandwich Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1486 and American Legion Post 181 will conduct ceremonies at the following locations: 11 a.m. Vetetans Park (gazebo), 11:25 a.m. Oak Ridge Cemetery, 11:45 a.m. St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery, 12:05 p.m. Pratt Road Cemetery, 12:20 Pine Mound Cemetery and 1 p.m. VFW Post 1486, 713 S. Main St.

HINCKLEY

SYCAMORE

Memorial Day Service

Memorial Day Program

Time: 10 a.m.

Place: Sycamore Veterans Club, 121 S. California St.

There will be patriotic songs sung by Dave Lundberg and Juanita Mundy, a speech by the Voice of Democracy High School contest winner and special guest speaker Chris Collins of Sycamore. Program will be followed by a parade to Elmwood Cemetery.

Memorial Day Parade

Time: 10:45 a.m.

Date: Monday

Place: Sycamore Veterans Club, 121 S. California St.

The parade route will run south on California Street to Elm Street, east to Somonauk Street, south to Charles Street and west to Elmwood Cemetery. The veterans marching will be accompanied by the Sycamore Middle School Marching Band as well as local scout groups and sports teams. A ceremony will be held at the cemetery.

WATERMAN

Memorial Day Services

Time: 9 a.m. to noon

Date: Monday, May 27

Place: Locations in Lee, Shabbona and Waterman
