Painters invited to ‘Paint a Plug’

City of DeKalb seeking participants for their program to beautify local fire hydrants

Like the fire hydrant shown here from Geneva, community members are being invited to beautify fire hydrants in the City of DeKalb as part of its Paint-A-Plug program through Nov. 1.

DeKALB – The city of DeKalb is calling all aspiring artists, especially painters, to adopt a fire hydrant and beautify it as part of their Paint-A-Plug program.

According to a Tuesday news release from the city, participants can adopt a hydrant free of charge, but are responsible for using their own paint and materials. They can apply by filling out a design form at www.cityofdekalb.com/paintaplug. Residents and nonresidents can participate.

The program began in 2018 by the city’s Citizens’ Community Enhancement Commission as a way for community members to transform fire hydrants throughout the city into works of art. Painters are encouraged to integrate elements of their neighborhood into the painting, the release says.

So far, people representing the DeKalb Public Library, the Egyptian Theatre and Northern Illinois University are participating, as are several residents.

The commission will review design applications monthly. Upon approval, participants are allowed to paint their hydrants through Nov. 1, according to the release.
