DeKALB – Continuing its 2019 summer season, Stage Coach Players invites you on a trip to the Greek island of Kalokairi to listen to the europop songs of ’70s pop group ABBA.
“Mamma Mia!” is the modern jukebox musical inspired by the songs of Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. The book was written by British playwright Catherine Johnson based on an original concept by producer Judy Craymer.
Directed by Amanda Smothers, the musical comedy “Mamma Mia!” opens May 30 at Stage Coach Theatre and runs through June 9. Including vocal direction by Terri Crain Goodman and pit director Christine Monteiro, “Mamma Mia!” finds young Sophie shortly before the day of her wedding with a quest: to have the most perfect, magical wedding.
For this to come to fruition, she must discover the identity of her father and have him at the ceremony to give her away.
Her mother, Donna, former singer of a 1970s pop group “Donna & the Dynamos,” however, refuses to talk about the past forcing Sophie to take matters into her own hands.
Months before her wedding, Sophie secretly goes through Donna’s diary and finds the names of three men who she believes could be her father – Sam, Bill and Harry. Without telling her mom, Sophie invites them to the wedding, and all three arrive to Donna’s surprise. The storytelling of ABBA’s timeless songs moves this enchanting story of love, laughter and friendship and creates an unforgettable show.
Popular ABBA songs in the production include “Dancing Queen,” “Take A Chance On Me,” and of course the title song, “Mamma Mia!” To prepare for the show, the original Broadway soundtrack, along with the entire ABBA catalogue, can be found on Spotify.
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. May 30, June 1 and June 6 through 8, and 2 p.m. June 2 and 9.
Tickets cost $20 for adults and $18 for seniors and children age 13 and younger.
