Area roundup: Kaneland takes third at Marengo tournament, DKCU ties; NIU softball splits

After losing to Marengo, 9-4, Kaneland bounced back for an 18-5 win against Conant behind two home runs from Rose Roach on Saturday to take third in Marengo’s tournament.

In the third-place game, the Knights (20-6) exploded for 10 runs in the first inning and pounded out 20 hits in the game. Roach was 4 for 4 with five RBIs and scored four times. Hailey Roach also was 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Donatela Sommesi had two hits, including a home run. Lauren Callahan and Danyelle Borysiewicz each had two hits.

Huntley beat Marengo, 3-0, to win the title.

Sycamore splits with Aurora Central Catholic: The Spartans cruised, 10-1, in the opener but lost, 10-8, in the second game in eight innings.

In the win, six Spartans (20-5-2) had two hits – Milani Sablan, Faith Reynolds, Gracyn Gabriel, Mindy Smith, Allison Polly and Mia Richards. Gabriel, Smith, Polly and Richards each drove in two runs.

The second game was a seesaw battle, with ACC scoring seven in the bottom of the fourth to erase a 4-0 Sycamore lead. The Spartans then tied it in the top of the sixth.

Haley Trela and Kenzie Schlosser were each 2 for 4 in the loss, while Hannah Mizgalski was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.


Sycamore cruises past Wheaton Academy: The Spartans won, 13-2, in six innings.

Logan Riley was 2 for 5, scored three times and drove in two runs. Gavin Crofoot, Jared Grubbs and Kevin Rink each had two of the Spartans’ 12 hits as Sycamore improved to 19-6.


DKCU ties Cedar Rapids Inferno: Leo Lenth scored in the 16th minute for DeKalb County United.

DeKalb County United gave the goal back in the 64th minute for the tie.


NIU splits with Western Michigan: The Huskies and Broncos split to end the regular season, with the Huskies losing, 8-7, then winning, 3-0.

The Huskies (26-23, 11-9) led Game 1, 4-1, after two innings and 7-6 after five in the loss. Jenny Van Geertry had two hits, two runs scored, two RBIs and a home run. Kira Mickelson had two hits.

Amber Bumbalough pitched the shutout in Game 2, walking two and striking out two while scattering six hits. Anne Allen had two hits in the win.
