The 18-piece community band Jazz in Progress will perform a fundraising concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building at Northern Illinois University.
This concert is a benefit for the Kevin Ballantine Music Scholarship Fund. The scholarship was set up in 2012 by Kevin’s family, through the DeKalb County Community Foundation. It is awarded to a graduating senior at DeKalb High School who is active in the school music program. Kevin loved marching band. He played percussion, both at DHS and then at Cornell University, where he became the percussion section leader. Kevin died in January 2012, at the age of 23, after a three-year battle with leukemia.
The band will perform a wide variety of jazz music from many decades of jazz music. The concert will feature a number of vocal and instrumental soloists from within the members of the ensemble.
Jazz in Progress organized to encourage local musicians to play jazz for the love of music. The group also is known for its practice of inviting local high school and college jazz musicians to sit in with the band, giving these young musicians an opportunity to gain more experience.
Jazz in Progress is an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that puts funds raised back into local community music programs, including the DeKalb, Genoa-Kingston, Hinckley-Big Rock, Indian Creek, Sandwich and Sycamore music booster organizations, as well as St. Mary’s-DeKalb and the DeKalb County Community Foundation.
Admission is free, but donations for the scholarship fund will be accepted. The concert is open to all. For more information on Jazz in Progress, call 815-751-0006 or like the band on Facebook. Funding for this performance comes from the Mary E. Stevens Trust.
