Jake Siegal wanted to challenge himself at the highest level.
Spencer Harris wanted something a little more secure at a top-level academic school.
Five DeKalb and Sycamore football players signed National Letters of Intent to play at the Division I level Wednesday, the start of the NCAA’s regular signing period for scholarship football players. Three more DeKalb athletes committed to play baseball.
Four of the five football players had to decide between choosing a preferred walk-on deal at a larger school or a secured scholarship from a smaller one.
Siegal, a lineman for Sycamore, chose to play for Mike Leach at Washington State, planning to work his way up as a preferred walk-on.
“I always wanted to see how far in college football I could go,” Siegal said. “I guess this is as far as it gets – [Pacific-12 Conference] football. I’m excited to see where the next four years take me.”
