Sandwich police seize skimmers at local Mobil station

Devices installed to collect bank information, make unlawful transactions

SANDWICH – If you’ve paid for gas at the pump at the Mobil station at 201 W. Church St., you’ll want to check your banking records.

According to Sandwich Police Chief Jim Bianchi, with the assistance of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, four skimming devices were found within the pumps at the station.

“It was a faulty locking mechanism, and the owners are working on securing new locking mechanisms,” Bianchi said.

The gas station isn’t out any money. These skimmers are used to collect debit and credit card information to make purchases elsewhere, Bianchi said.

He said his department is working with secret service agents to find out who committed the crime, although he said he hasn’t been able to rule out that the suspect isn’t local.

Bianch said because the skimmers were Bluetooth compatible, his department was able to use an app to identify the threat.

He said his department is working with local gas stations and banks to best address the issue going forward.

Anyone with more questions should call Bianchi at 815-786-7261.
