Area roundup: Scharping named finalist; DeKalb-Sycamore swimming wins

Northern Illinois offensive lineman was one of 13 finalists for the Campbell Trophy presented in New York City at the National Football Foundation dinner on Tuesday night.

The award is warded to the best football scholar-athlete in the nation.

Clemson defensive lineman Christian Wilkins won the award.

Scharping was also honored as a National Scholar-Athlete at the dinner. He played every snap for the Huskies this year and has allowed one sack in the last three season. He started 51 consecutive games for the Huskies.

The Huskies return to action in the Boca Raton Bowl at 6 p.m. Dec. 18, facing UAB. They are off a win Friday in the MAC Championship game, coming from 19 down to beat Buffalo, 30-29.


Woods player of the week again: NIU senior Courtney Woods was named Mid-American Conference player of the week, her second such honor this season. She also won the award on Nov. 13.

Woods averaged 23.7 points per game in three games, two wins and a loss, with scoring efforts of 28 against Nevada, 25 against North Dakota State and 18 against Montana.

Woods shot 26 of 47 (55.3 percent) from the floor during the week, 8 of 20 on 3-pointers (40 percent), averaged two assists per game, 4.7 assists a game and two steals per game over the three-game stretch.

During the last week, NU defeated North Dakota State 81-63 as Woods scored a team-high 28 points, totaled four assists and five rebounds in the win. The Huskies dropped a road contest to Montana, 86-70, and defeated Nevada 98-69.

The Huskies take on Southern Illinois on at 7 p.m. in Carbondale as part of the Compass Challenge.


Barbs swimming wins: DeKalb-Sycamore defeated LaSalle-Peru on Tuesday as Gavin Anderson led the way with wins in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles.

Nathan Braun won his 100 butterfly race and David Ruetten topped the
100 breastroke competitors.

Coach Melanie Chambers was “excited to see the effort from team newcomers James Cerney, Kyle Horn and Aaron Hammarberg.”

The boys swim again on Saturday at the Freeport Invite.
