I’m the new marketing and events manager at the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and started amid the Halloween season. Much like the commercials we see on television, the day after Halloween I switched over to planning for the holidays.
The first event of the holiday season in downtown DeKalb will be Santa Comes to Town Thursday at the Egyptian Theatre. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with cookies, cocoa and caroling with the DeKalb High School Madrigals. Then, at 7 p.m., Santa is escorted into town to open his house in Van Buer Plaza. Santa will visit with children in his house until 8 p.m. The Santa House will be open from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday.
On Dec. 4, the DeKalb Chamber will host its annual Winter Bash from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the new Cornerstone of DeKalb in downtown. It will be a celebration of the apartment and retail complex and a great year with our DeKalb Chamber members.
Dec. 8 will be a full day of events in downtown. The day begins with complimentary horse-drawn carriage rides from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Check in at the Frontier Communications building at 225 E. Locust St. to warm up with a cup of cocoa. The carriage rides will go up Second Street, down Lincoln Highway where riders can see decorative downtown and festive shop windows, and back down Third Street, heading toward the Frontier building. The Santa House also will be open during this time, where children can share their Christmas wishes with Santa.
Later in the day, downtown’s Taste of the Season event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. The gradual tasting event will start at the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, where participants will receive a complimentary wine glass and list of participating businesses. Each of the 12 tasting locations will have appetizers from local restaurants paired with tastings of wine, beer and spirits, featuring local samples from Forge Brewhouse, Waterman Winery and Acquaviva Winery. This will be a joyful evening of strolling through downtown DeKalb while tasting, shopping and listening to local carolers. For a complete list of participating businesses and to buy tickets, visit dekalb.org.
The last downtown event of the season will be final visits with Santa from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Dec. 15 at his house. Children can bring their lists and visit with Santa just before he takes off for Christmas!
These are not the only events happening in DeKalb, so visit www.dekalb.org for a full list of events and follow the DeKalb Chamber on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to stay connected.
The commercials on television might remind you to buy your gifts, but mark your calendars, too, so you don’t miss any of these traditional holiday events in DeKalb.
