Targeting call deemed incorrect by MAC; Wynne still set to miss first half of Toledo game

Northern Illinois junior defensive tackle Quintin Wynne will miss the first half of Wednesday’s home game with Toledo because of a targeting call issued during Thursday’s game at Akron that since has been deemed incorrect.

The Mid-American Conference acknowledged the call for being incorrect on the field and that the officiating crew was wrong for not overturning the call upon review in a statement released Thursday afternoon.

Wynne was ejected from the game at the 5:37 mark of the third quarter for a hit to the shoulder of Akron quarterback Kato Nelson.

Bill Carollo, coordinator of football officials for the Collegiate Officiating Consortium, acknowledged the mistake in a statement provided by the MAC.

A representative of the school said coach Rod Carey will not comment on Wynne’s suspension or the MAC’s statement.
