In the 14th Congressional District, U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren is facing his toughest opponent since he defeated incumbent Democrat Bill Foster in 2010.
Democrat Lauren Underwood, 32, of Naperville says she opposes Hultgren because of his opposition to the Affordable Care Act, a law she worked to implement during her time as a senior adviser in the federal Department of Health and Human Services in President Barack Obama’s administration.
Hultgren, 52, counters by pointing out that the ACA has failed to provide real health care options for residents of the district, which includes most of eastern DeKalb County, including the city of Sycamore and communities along Somonauk Road including Cortland, Hinckley, Sandwich and most of Somonauk.
He points out, correctly, that in parts of the district, including DeKalb, McHenry and Kendall counties, there is only one insurance carrier for residents to choose – Blue Cross Blue Shield. People often end up buying high-deductible plans that still leave them with high out-of-pocket costs for health care.
Hultgren also supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which has spurred economic growth nationwide. Although this bill capped the deduction for state and local taxes at $10,000 a year, Hultgren says 90 percent of district residents will see a tax cut as a result of the legislation, and adds that many will not have to itemize their taxes at all because the standard deduction has increased from $6,500 to $12,000 for individuals and from $13,000 $24,000 for married couples.
Hultgren remains committed to enforcing immigration laws, including by building a wall along wth nation’s border with Mexico if necessary, but takes issue with the Trump Administration’s cutbacks on accepting refugees as well as the tariffs imposed that may hurt American farmers and manufacturers. He supports Second Amendment rights for Americans and is anti-abortion.
His concern for stopping human trafficking is an example of the kind of compassionate conservative approach that we believe is representative of the district, which includes most of Kendall County.
We believe most residents of the 14th want lower taxes. They want health care delivered in a system that works. They want our country to enforce immigration laws and stop looking the other way as those laws are flouted.
Although Underwood is a promising candidate with a clear message on an important issue, we believe Hultgren best represents the district.
Hultgren is endorsed.
