Scholarship fund started for Indian Creek grads

SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Community Foundation announced a new scholarship fund that provides annual awards to Indian Creek High School graduates.

Two awards will be given though the Sheldon and Betty Kesner Scholarship Fund, according to a news release. Those two awards are the Sheldon M. Kesner Agricultural Scholarship and the Betty M. Kesner Music/Education Scholarship.

The Kesners were born and raised on farms near Waterman and attended one-room schoolhouses, the release said.

Sheldon Kesner, known as Ted, worked in agriculture-related jobs after high school to save money to attend University of Illinois, but he ended up serving in the military during World War II. Betty graduated with a degree in music from Cornell College in Iowa and recruited Ted to join her church choir. The two were married two years later when Ted was on leave from the Army.

Ted Kesner was a 4-H leader, member of the masonic lodge, active in the farm bureau, a founding member of the Waterman Heritage Society and active in the Waterman United Methodist Church, according to the release. Betty Kesner played the organ and piano, directed the choir at the church, as well as assisted music directing, accompanying bands and choral contests at Waterman schools.

Donations to any fund at the Community Foundation, including the Sheldon and Betty Kesner Scholarship Fund, can be made online at dekalbccf.org/donate, or by mail to the DeKalb County Community Foundation, 475 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, IL 60178.
