Sycamore police cracking down on distracted driving

SYCAMORE – With April being National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Sycamore Police Department will crack down on distracted driving for the remainder of the month.

From April 16 to 30, police will be conducting additional patrols specifically targeting drivers using cellphones illegally.

"Our goal is to make our streets as safe as possible for motorists and pedestrians alike," Cmdr. Steven Cook said in a news release.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving claimed 3,477 lives and injured 391,000 people in 2015.

Under Illinois law, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle on a roadway while using an electronic communication device unless it is used hands-free.
