Area roundup: Kaneland soccer rolls, NIU baseball wins

The Kaneland girls soccer team exploded for four second-half goals in a 6-0 win Wednesday against Harlem.

Sasha Clinnin and Bailey Prichard scored in the first half to stake the Knights (4-1-1) to a 2-0 lead. Just a minute into the second half, Rachel Lutter connected on a goal, then assisted Taylor Carlson in the 45th minute and the 47th minute to push the lead to 5-0.

Abbie Lomahan scored with 20 minutes left on Lutter’s fourth assist.

H-BR ties at Rochelle: Sam Nobel and Tori Prellberg each scored twice as the Royals escaped Rochelle with a 4-4 tie.

Prellberg’s second goal was on a penalty kick, giving the Royals (0-4-2) a 4-3 lead in the 56th minute, but Rochelle tied with 11:29 left.

The Hubs never trailed in the first half.

PREP SOFTBALL

Spartans stall at Ottawa: Sycamore fell to Ottawa, 8-1.

Sycamore starter Allyson Versluys (1-1) gave up four earned runs and five hits, while striking out two in five innings. Hannah Mizgalski went 1 for 3 with double and an RBI.

The Spartans (4-3) host Marian Central at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Kaneland defeats Morris: The Knights banged out 12 hits in a 9-2 win at Morris.

Hannah Theobald had two hits, including a homer, in a six-RBI game. Donatela Sommesi was 3 for 3 with an RBI. Rose Roach and McKenna Ryan each had two hits.

Ryan allowed two earned runs in the complete game.

Somonauk too much for Indian Creek: The Timberwolves lost, 15-2.

Hailey Herrmann hit a home run in the loss for IC.

PREP BASEBALL

IC loses at Somonauk: The Timberwolves lost, 10-4.

Indian Creek led 4-2 in the fifth after Ethan Johanningsmeier hit a three-run homer in the fifth.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Ball State sweeps NIU: The Huskies dropped a pair of games to the Cardinals, 1-0 and 6-5.

The Huskies led 5-4 in the sixth inning of the late game after a bases-loaded double by Dominique Greeno with two outs, but lost to fall to 14-24 and 5-6 in MAC play.

In the first game, junior Alex Frenz gave up only one run on five hits in 41/3 innings pitched.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

NIU wins again: The Huskies knocked off NAIA foe Trinity College, 6-1, for their second win in as many days.

“Great midweek set for us this week,” Huskies coach Mike Kunigonis said. “Getting the series win against UIC and winning against a very good Trinity team was a great effort.”

Junior starter William Anderson earned his first win of the season. He scattered six hits in six innings, and gave up only one run while striking out five and walking none.
