DeKALB – After serving Northern Illinois University for 22 years as a member of the Board of Trustees, Robert Boey has decided the time is right to retire.

During his last board meeting March 8, a resolution was read to honor Boey, of Sycamore, for his service to the university.

“Now, therefore be it resolved that the Board of Trustees of Northern Illinois University in formal meeting herein assembled extends its grateful appreciation to Robert T. Boey for his distinguished service to Northern Illinois University from 1996 through 2018,” the resolution said.

DeKalb Mayor Jerry Smith also offered his thanks to Boey during the meeting.

“As a member of the community for over 50 years, I’ve seen Bob in a variety of capacities,” Smith said. “As a proud NIU grad, I know Bob considers himself a fellow Huskie, and on behalf of our family and the city of DeKalb and the thousands who benefited from Bob Boey’s long term service, you have my heart felt thanks.”

During his time with the board, Boey was part of the discussion on a number of transformative projects, including the renovation of Altgeld Hall and the construction of the Engineering Building, Barsema Hall, LaTourette Hall, the Latino Center, Campus Child Care, NIU-Naperville, the Convocation Center, the Barsema Alumni and Visitor’s Center and the Northern View Community.

Boey and his wife, Doris, also have been active members of the NIU community and have been donors to the NIU Foundation, Huskie Athletic Fund, Kishwaukee College Foundation and other causes.
