DeKalb grad's relationship on MTV's 'Teen Mom' grows shaky during second episode

Couple visits Bullfrogs & Butterflies in Sycamore

CORTLAND – DeKalb High School graduate and 19-year-old Cortland resident Kayla Sessler fought with her then-boyfriend and visited a Sycamore resale shop in the second episode of MTV’s latest iteration of its “Teen Mom” franchise, “Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant.”

“I want it to work with Stephan, because I want that happy family that I didn’t have growing up,” Sessler said.

Aerial shots of DeKalb with noticeable Northern Illinois University buildings can be seen, and Sessler and her child’s father, Stephan Alexander of DeKalb, visit Bullfrogs & Butterflies, a children’s resale shop in Sycamore, during the Monday night episode.

The “Teen Mom” franchise consistently has been a top performer for MTV and even has been credited with affecting the teen birth rate, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Bureau of Economic Research.

It documents several young couples as they cope with unplanned pregnancies.

Sessler, Alexander and their son already have been featured in promotional clips on social media, a “Meet The New Moms” special and the first episode, which aired March 12.

The couple’s relationship continued to be portrayed as rocky Monday, as Alexander failed to help Sessler set up their son’s room and spent time with a woman with whom he had previously cheated on Sessler with.

“I’m worried that nothing is going to change,” Sessler said.

Alexander told his friends he was excited to be best friends with his son but did not know how long his relationship with Sessler would last.

“We’re different from what we used to be,” Alexander said. “I love her, but I’m 19, and I want to have fun.”

Sessler previously told the Daily Chronicle she was excited to be a role model for other young mothers after appearing on the show.

“Just because you’re a young mom, you can still be successful,” Sessler said. “There’s such a stigma, but you can definitely be successful and be a great mother to your child.”
