DeKALB – Grocery shopping in the area just got easier.

Aldi, 2569 Sycamore Road in DeKalb, now offers online grocery ordering and home delivery service through a partnership with Instacart. The new service started Monday.

“By expanding our partnership with Instacart, we’re making groceries even more accessible to residents across five markets spanning three states,” said Jason Hart, CEO, Aldi U.S. “[We] are eager to expand online shopping to even more Aldi customers.”

The grocery store’s first delivery offering was with Instacart in 2017 for the Atlanta, Dallas and Los Angeles metropolitan areas. Aldi added northern Illinois and northwest Indiana at the beginning of this month.

Online grocery shoppers can use the delivery service for a fee of $9.99 per order and can expect to receive their groceries within a few hours, according to Instacart. If customers want to receive their groceries even quicker, an extra fee can be added.

Instacart offers unlimited delivery through monthly and annual memberships. According to its website, customers can pay $149 for an annual membership, or $14.99 on a monthly basis.

Northern Illinois University graduate and DeKalb resident Dustin Gurnitz said he plans to try out the new online service.

“I think online grocery shopping and delivery is good for people that are busy and don’t have time to shop themselves,” Gurnitz said. “It could be beneficial for older or disabled people, too.”

As a third-party delivery service, Instacart maintains and coordinates the hiring of its employees and shoppers. Aldi couldn’t confirm how many new hires were made for the new service in DeKalb.

In addition to Aldi, Instacart also delivers products from Schnucks, CVS Pharmacy and Petco in DeKalb.

Aldi Batavia Division Vice President Laura Branneman said the response to online grocery shopping and delivery has been overwhelmingly positive.

“People can find mostly everything they find in-store on Instacart, including fresh produce and organics, dairy, gluten-free foods, USDA choice beef and Little Journey premium baby items," she said.

Instacart is offering coupons for first-time customers, including $20 off and free deliver of their first order of $34 or more with code LOVEALDI through May 31.
