Strohacker: Expo a great way to get to know Genoa

I would like to thank everyone that took advantage of the beautiful weather this past Saturday and came out to the Genoa Area Chamber’s Home & Business Expo.

Congratulations to all of our raffle winners – Laura Stewart was the lucky winner of the gas grill sponsored by Paulsen Appliance, Tim Whiting was the winner of the Yeti cooler sponsored by Genoa Motors Auto Repair and Sandra Duda was the winner of the two-night stay at the Genoa Guest House.

It was a great day to get to know Genoa. Several local businesses and organizations were there to give attendees a taste of what Genoa is all about.

Special attractions included Northern Illinois University STEM activities, a “unicorn” from Hendrick Stables and a kissing booth sponsored by Raven’s Husky Haven & Rescue. If you missed out on all the fun this year, be sure to mark your calendar for the 12th annual Home & Business Expo on March 2, 2019.

We are looking forward to seeing you exploring Genoa soon … strolling the farmers markets, shopping downtown, wine tasting at Prairie State Winery, canoeing the Kishwaukee River or hiking at Russel Woods. Be sure to check the chamber website for lots of family-friendly events and activities coming up this spring and summer season. There is so much to do in Genoa.

We currently are accepting registrations for the farmers markets. If you are a local farmer, crafter, artist, food vendor or musician, and you are interested in being part of the markets, send an email to info@genoaareachamber.com. There will be five markets this year. They will be held on the fourth Saturday of each month from May to September – May 26, June 23, July 28, Aug. 25 and Sept. 22.

We also will continue our small-town traditions this summer and will host the 59th annual Genoa Days King and Queen Scholarship contest.

The chamber and member businesses recognize the importance of education, as well as the increasing costs that come with it.

One of the ways we support our students and future leaders is by providing a scholarship contest opportunity open to all graduating seniors.

All G-K High School seniors are able to apply for the scholarship at www.gkschools.org.

To be considered, candidates need to complete an application and submit it to the high school guidance office before April 3. All completed applicants will be reviewed and finalists will be notified.

The finalists will compete in a final judging that will take place the first evening of Genoa Days from 6 to 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Heartland Bank. Judging will be completed at 8 p.m. on the main stage in downtown Genoa, where the 2018 Genoa Days King and Queen will be announced and each will be awarded $1,000.

If you have any questions about the scholarship or any of our upcoming events, call the chamber office at 815-784-2212 or email info@genoaareachamber.com.

Come explore Genoa this spring!
