Donations sought for Tanzania Development Support garage sale

Tanzania Development Support is seeking donations of saleable items for their upcoming garage sale fundraiser. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 19 to 21 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1915 N. First St. in DeKalb.

Donations can be dropped off before the sale dates by calling Jeanine at 815-901-0393 or Tricia at 815-899-7043 to schedule a time. Arrangements also can be made for donations to be picked up if that is needed.

Tanzania Development Support is a nonprofit 501c3 organization supported by many volunteers from the DeKalb area as well as throughout the United States. Supporters of the organization help families and community members in rural Tanzania lift themselves out of poverty through education, training and community development. TDS partners with grassroots NGOs in Tanzania, and other organizations, to achieve these objectives.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the founding of TDS. During that time, TDS has facilitated the construction of a dormitory that houses 160 high school girls, and the installation of solar panels to provide classroom lighting. TDS also has enabled the construction of a community library and computer center that will serve more than 2,000 girls and boys and their families in the community of Nyegina in Tanzania. It is being built in three phases, each phase costing an estimated $150,000.

The focus of TDS has moved “from bricks to books.” Current projects include stocking the library with books, purchasing computers for use by students, teachers and members of the community, and financing the installation of a cell tower that enables internet use.

TDS has partnered with professionals from Northern Illinois University to establish a Career Pathways program for youth which prepares them for careers that are in high demand in the region and supports the region’s economic development needs. The TDS/NIU partnership also has created a startup water filtration business with local women potters whereby they make clay filters that cleanse the dirty and contaminated water that is retrieved from any available source.

In addition to donations of merchandise for sale, financial donations are also gratefully accepted. Checks can be made payable to Tanzania Development Support and mailed to 201 Thornbrook Road, DeKalb, IL 60115. Online donations can be made at www.tdsnfp.org.

All donations will be acknowledged with an IRS receipt. Donors are asked to indicate on the check if they choose to remain anonymous. Call 815-901-0393 for more information or email jthurmaier@hotmail.com.
