DeKalb County Community Gardens will host its first organizing meeting of the 2018 growing season at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 15.
The meeting and soup dinner created by Monika Merryman of Monika’s Organic Bakery will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb, 158 N. Fourth St. It is free and open to the public.
The event will be an opportunity to get an update on all the activities of DCCG and to learn of ways to become involved in ending hunger in DeKalb County with fresh healthy vegetables. Attendees can learn about upcoming DCCG events, workshops, volunteer opportunities and prairie restoration.
DCCG is beginning its seventh growing season. In its first six years, it has expanded to more than 50 garden locations across DeKalb County.
The group has coordinated more than 300 volunteers a year to raise more than 100,000 pounds of fresh vegetables for food pantries, meal sites, senior living facilities and for others in need.
The meeting also will introduce two newly elected members to the DCCG Board of Directors Executive Committee: Mary Johnson of Sycamore as vice president and Ellingsworth Webb of DeKalb as treasurer. Both have been serving on the board of directors for some time.
