Gymnastics: DeKalb falls short of qualifying as a team for state, Hickey has best meet of the season

Morreale: 'There are plenty of mixed emotions. We were underdogs coming in. I thought we were peaking at the right time and just couldn’t put it together today. We still had some great performances.'

ROSELLE – Madison Hickey had her best meet of the season during the IHSA Lake Park Sectional Meet on Thursday night, but unfortunately for the rest of the DeKalb gymnastics team, the Barbs placed third, falling just short of qualifying as a team for state.

Hickey qualified for state in every event, and teammate Lauren Leman qualified in uneven bars.

“There are plenty of mixed emotions,” DeKalb gymnastics coach Andrew Morreale said. “We were underdogs coming in. I thought we were peaking at the right time and just couldn’t put it together today. We still had some great performances.”

The Barbs finished third out of six teams with 144.175 points, behind Glebard West (149.425) and Wheaton Warrenville South (145.200). The top two teams advanced to the state competition next week.

Despite not reaching the state championships, Morreale still was happy for both Hickey and Leman.

Hickey finished in first place in the vault with a score of 9.8750. Leman placed third in uneven bars with a score of 9.5000.

“Maddie definitely had her best meet of the season,” Morreale said. “Hopefully she can have her next best meet of the season next week. I’m happy for those two, and I think they can both place at state.”

Hickey and Leman will compete in the state final meet Feb. 16 and 17 at Palatine High School.

“I talked to them earlier this week. … They’re all hungry to get back to working out this summer and get better and even more prepared for next year,” Morreale said. “We’ll have similar conversations next week about the future and where to go from here. We had some slip ups [Thursday night], but I’m proud of them.”
