Area roundup: Hickey named athlete of the week; DeKalb to honor state team; NIU men lose

Madison Hickey didn't just win the all-around Tuesday at the Oak Park-River Forest Regional. She won everything.

Hickey won all four individual events as the DeKalb-Sycamore co-op put up 145.3 points in its regional win.

Hickey posted a 38.15 overall with a 9.525 on the floor, a 9.225 on the beam, a 9.55 on the bars and a 9.85 on the vault.

Hickey and the Barbs will compete Thursday in the Lake Park Sectional.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

NIU upset bid falls short: The Huskies had a couple chances to tie the game late, but MAC West-leading Toledo held on for an 82-77 win Tuesday night.

Eugene German scored a career-best 30 points for the Huskies (10-14 overall, 3-8 MAC). However, he missed a layup with 34 seconds left that would have pulled the Huskies to within one, and with Toledo (17-7, 9-2) leading 80-77 with 21 seconds left, he missed a 3-pointer.

He was the only Huskie to attempt a field goal in the final 2:41 of the game, although Levi Bradley, who scored 24 points, made a pair of free throws.

Aside from German and Bradley, no Huskie scored more than seven points. German had a team-best eight rebounds.

BOYS BASKETBALL

DeKalb to honor 1968 team: Before the Barbs play Morris on Friday, the school will honor the 1967-68 boys basketball team for the 50th anniversary of its fourth-place finish at the state tournament.

The team will be honored in a ceremony at 6:45 p.m.

Indian Creek tops Mooseheart: Nolan Govig had 24 points, 16 rebounds and five assists as the Timberwolves won, 72-54.

Cooper Larsen added 14 points and five rebounds while Louis Faivre had eight points, six rebounds and five assists.

Cogs fall to Byron: Genoa-Kingston lost, 61-34, despite Nate Nesler's 16 points.

Coach Corey Jenkins said the Cogs (7-16, 1-5 Big Northern Conference) were hoping to "deflate the ball," and keep the ball from Byron.

"We allowed 51, 52 possession, which I thought would give us a chance to win or at least keep it close," Jenkins said. "But they made a ton of shots. They are a great shooting team and we struggle to score. It's the story of our season."

GIRLS BASKETBALL

IC wins play-in game: The Timberwolves knocked off Paw Paw, 66-52, in a first-round game at the Class 1A Marquette Regional.

Morgan Johnson had 18 points and 23 rebounds for the Timberwolves. Olivia Turner also scored 18, Sarah Diehl had 11 points, eight rebounds and eight assists and Jade Milostan scored 13.

Indian Creek will play No. 1 Annawan in a semifinal at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

H-BR season ends: The No. 6 Royals lost 54-23 to No. 3 Aurora Christian in a Class 1A Aurora Christian Regional semifinal.

Kaneland girls roll at Sterling: The Knights won, 59-40.

They improved to 23-4 with the win.
