SYCAMORE – John Ward has been announced as the winner of the 2017 Clifford Danielson Outstanding Citizen Award by the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce.

Ward’s family has seven generations of farmers, the first farm having been platted in 1836, he said, when the family made the trek west from New England.

“This award recognizes individuals who achieve the highest level of professional accomplishment, excel in their chosen field, and most importantly have dedicated their time, knowledge and resources to enhance the quality of life in Sycamore for everyone,” said Rose Treml, executive director of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce.

Despite his family’s lengthy history in farming, Ward said he didn’t think about being a farmer until he went to college, and even after that he worked in several other jobs around DeKalb and Sycamore before going into the family business. On his farm, he raises swine, corn, soybeans, wheat and hay.

Ward and his son, Stephen, also host field trips to the farm for students, giving them a tour of the grounds and some of its history.

The award is named after Cliff Danielson, former president and chairman of the National Bank and Trust Company and active member of the community.

Nominees for the award must be Sycamore residents or have enhanced life in Sycamore, and have
10 years of leadership in civic activities, according to a Chamber of Commerce news release.

Ward will be recognized at the Sycamore Chamber’s 103rd annual meeting, which will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 25 at Church of St. Mary Memorial Hall, 322 Waterman St.
