Letter: Increased choice sign Democratic Party is growing

To the Editor:

The DeKalb County Democratic Party has seen a sharp increase in participation over the last few years. That interest, along with recent political activism in DeKalb County and across the U.S., has resulted in more choices on your election day ballot this coming year.

In 2018, DeKalb County voters will have more candidates from which to choose than in many past elections.

Locally, Democrats will be running in 11 of the 12 County Board districts.

These candidates reflect the diversity of DeKalb County and hope to better represent all DeKalb County residents on the County Board. For countywide offices, two Democratic women will be on the ballot after collecting more than 400 ballot-access petition signatures.

For state races, more than 850 signatures were gathered for four legislative candidates, and additional signatures were gathered for nine candidates for governor and other statewide constitutional offices.

Petitions were also circulated for eight of the Democratic candidates running in the 14th and 16th U.S. Congressional Districts. Our party is also continuing to grow at the most fundamental level, with more candidates on the ballot for precinct committee positions than the DeKalb County Democrats have been fielded in many years.

The wealth of choices on the coming year’s ballot is not only because of the recent surge in political interest, but also because of the grass-roots structure the DeKalb County Democrats have been building for more than a decade.

Across our county, these grass-roots activists worked door-to-door to collect more than 3,000 signatures in less than 3 months to ensure a place on the ballot for candidates at all levels of our government, ensuring that voters will have real choices in the coming election.
