Letter: Republicans must renounce President Trump

To the Editor:

My hope for the future of the U.S. is that Republicans will rise to the occasion and finally renounce Donald Trump and nominate someone else for president for the 2020 elections.

Why? Because Donald Trump, regardless of whether he colluded with the Russians in the last election, has been surely forwarding the plans of Vladimir Putin by systematically undermining Americans’ confidence in their precious democratic institutions. Whenever he is rightly criticized for anything, this president loudly declares entire institutions illegitimate. So, during the last campaign, he declared the primary and electoral system rigged. When our intelligence community agreed that Russians had interfered with the elections, he denounced them.

While all presidents have had to contend with news reports and editorials they don’t like, Donald Trump does not contend, he simply calls people names and impetuously declares the free press the true enemy of the nation. He regularly seeks to poison people against the judicial system by summarily firing the head of the FBI and declaring every decision he doesn’t like, by a judge or jury, a travesty of justice. The latest instance of this served as the impetus for this letter.

Who dares to justify these behaviors by any president? Certainly no one who cherishes our democratic institutions – the institutions that make America great! This man is not displaying colorful personality traits. He is not showing himself to be a strong leader or even a street fighter. He is instead, undoubtedly, furthering the cause of the enemies of democracy by hollowing out our confidence in and loyalty to the best our nation has to offer the world.

For the sake of the Republican Party and the survival of our nation, this man must not be nominated for a second term.
