Holiday Open House set at Ellwood House in DeKalb

DeKALB – Kick off your holiday season at the Ellwood House with the annual three-day Holiday Open House this weekend.

Visitors to the museum will enjoy live music as they tour the three-story mansion all decorated for Christmas. Tour guides will be stationed on each level to share the history of the home and Ellwood family.

Scheduled musicians include the Northern Illinois Cello Ensemble and Northern Illinois University’s Harmelodics a cappella group. For the full weekend music schedule, visit www.ellwoodhouse.org/events. There will be refreshments and exhibits in the Visitor Center.

Event hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Ticket sales end 30 minutes before close. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for ages 6 to 17. Children younger than 6 get in free. Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.ellwoodhouse.org or in person in the Ellwood House Visitor Center. Tickets also will be available during the event in the Visitor Center.

More than a dozen rooms in the Ellwood mansion, one of the Midwest’s most elegant historic homes, will be decorated by volunteers, community organizations and local businesses. Participants include Altrusa International of DeKalb/Sycamore; DeKalb School District 428 librarians; Kishwaukee College Special Events Class; First National Bank; Steve Klopfenstein, Country Financial Shabbona; Hickey Farms (Josh and Kristen Hickey); Belle & Herbie’s Handmade Treasures and Vintage Finds (Kori Rempfer Pietrowski and Mark Pietrowski Jr.); Kohl’s of Batavia; DeKalb Area Garden Club; Kishwaukee United Way; Hair Cuttery; Kathy Hallgren; Pam and Tim Holt; Tracy Coyle; and Cracker Jax.
