Police: Woman, 72, in serious condition after accidentally shooting self

KIRKLAND – A 72-year-old Kingston woman is in serious condition at a Rockford hospital after police said she accidentally shot herself in the chest Monday morning.

According to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Jane Johnson, of the 5700 block of Old State Road, accidentally shot herself in the chest about 9:15 a.m. Monday with a .38-caliber handgun.

After first responders performed first aid on Johnson, she was taken to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where she was listed as stable Monday evening.

Johnson’s husband, Vernon Johnson, also in his 70s, was being questioned inside the house before 11 a.m. Monday.

The release said no foul play is suspected.
