Every year the question is asked: “How early is too early for holiday music?”
This is probably because the feeling of the holidays brings everyone warm happy sentiments and memories especially as the weather gets colder and the evenings get darker and darker earlier each day. While many people draw the line at after Halloween, even though we haven’t celebrated Thanksgiving quite yet, there are some exciting holiday events in DeKalb to at least mark on your calendar even if you’re not one to start playing Bing Crosby on repeat.
The first event that kicks off the holiday season in downtown DeKalb is Santa Comes to Town on Nov. 30 at the Egyptian Theatre. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with cookies, cocoa and caroling with the DeKalb High School Madrigals. Then, at 7 p.m. Santa is ushered into town to open his house in Van Buer Plaza along with the mayor of DeKalb.
Then, on Dec. 2, residents can enjoy a full day of events in downtown DeKalb. The day begins with complimentary horse-drawn carriage rides from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Check in at the Egyptian Theatre and grab a cup of hot cocoa. The carriage rides will go down Lincoln Highway where riders will see the lit-up downtown and festive shop windows, then down Third Street to the DeKalb Public Library, and back to the Egyptian Theatre. The Santa House in Van Buer Plaza also will be open during this time where children can bring their lists and visit with Santa.
The day then continues with a new event – “Taste of the Season” from 5 to 8 p.m. The progressive tasting event will begin at the DeKalb Chamber, where participants will receive a commemorative glass and list of tasting locations. Each of the 15 tasting locations will have samples of food from local restaurants and tastings of either wine, whiskey, tequila and other crafted beverages – featuring Waterman Winery and Whiskey Acres. This will be a festive evening of strolling in downtown DeKalb, tasting new things and crossing items off your holiday shopping list! The DeKalb Chamber will then host its annual Winter Bash on Dec. 5 at the new Sundog IT location in downtown DeKalb. This will be a celebration of the completion of the renovation and a great year with our DeKalb Chamber members.
These are not the only holiday events going on in DeKalb, so as always, go to www.dekalb.org for a full list of events and follow the DeKalb Chamber on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to stay connected.
Mark your calendars so you don’t miss out on these traditional and new events in DeKalb even if you haven’t hung your stockings yet!
