Letters to the Editor

Letter: Why publish all 13 mugshots of arrested men?

To the Editor:

Why did the Daily Chronicle choose to print the faces of 13 young men on the front page Saturday?

Was it sensational pandering to sell more papers? A journalistic tactic to push readers to page 3? Or just blatant racism?

Many crimes, from the petty “failure to appear” to the serious “aggravated battery,” are disproportionately committed by the poor, regardless of race, religion or ethnicity. Not too long ago, the poor were Italian, Irish and Polish.

Publishing their mugshots in newspapers clearly fueled hatred of immigrants, Catholics and Jews. The Chronicle’s decision to print photos of 13 men of color (accused, not convicted) on the front page, for whatever reason, is inflammatory, divisive and feeds racial conflict.

Shame on you.
